Legacy vs Lunacy

Trump is set to host a UFC fight on the White House lawn next year, with Dana White confirming the event as part of the US’s 250th independence celebrations.

US President Donald Trump is pressing on with plans to host a UFC cage fight on the White House’s South Lawn next year.

Trump first teased the mixed martial arts (MMA) event in July, saying that he wanted more than 20,000 fans to attend as part of his country’s celebrations to mark 250 years since independence.

Euro News August 9, 2025

Five presidents, each caught in a moment of contemplation before history turned. Their thought bubbles—rendered in cartoon form—offer symbolic glimpses into the decisions that shaped the nation.

George Washington, hand to chin and eyes closed, envisions a small boat slicing through icy waters. He stands at the bow, flag in hand, flanked by soldiers paddling through the Delaware. His thought bubble isn’t just about crossing a river—it’s about crossing into a new identity, one forged by resolve and unity in the face of overwhelming odds.

Abraham Lincoln, brow furrowed beneath his stovepipe hat, imagines a parchment labeled “Dream Your Life.” He signs it with a quill as a formerly enslaved man breaks his shackles and raises his arms in celebration. Lincoln’s bubble is a moral reckoning, a vision of liberation and national transformation through courage and conviction.

Theodore Roosevelt, mustache bristling and glasses gleaming, sees himself standing in a lush forest, staff in hand. Towering trees and rolling hills stretch behind him. His bubble is a call to stewardship—a belief that the land itself is part of the American legacy, and that preserving it is an act of patriotism.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, gaze steady and thoughtful, imagines a worker swinging a pickaxe on a construction site. A bridge rises in the background, scaffolding and beams reaching skyward. His bubble is infrastructure as hope—labor as dignity, and recovery as a collective endeavor.

Each of these presidents, in their own way, imagined a nation that could be better than it was. Their thought bubbles are not just symbolic—they’re aspirational. They reflect a willingness to wrestle with complexity, to lead with vision, and to leave behind something more enduring than ego.

Then there’s Donald Trump. His imagined thought bubble bursts with spectacle: an MMA octagon erected on the White House lawn, fireworks overhead, fighters in red, white, and blue trunks circling each other while drones spell out “USA 250.” A bald eagle mascot referees the match. Trump stands center stage, arms raised like a ringmaster, basking in the glow of pay-per-view patriotism.

Trump’s bubble is a gaudy spectacle of man-child idiocy—less a vision than a tantrum in technicolor, projecting his lunacy onto the global stage with all the subtlety of a fireworks show inside a circus tent.

While past presidents wrestled with the soul of the nation, Trump’s bubble is pure performance. And in that performance, America risks becoming a caricature of itself. The rest of the world watches, not with admiration, but with confusion and concern. The White House, once a symbol of deliberation and dignity, becomes a backdrop for gladiatorial absurdity.

This isn’t just a bizarre birthday celebration—it’s a metaphor for a nation losing its narrative and its direction. Where thoughtful legacy once stood, now looms a cage match. And the question lingers: what story are we telling the world when the fight becomes the feature?

Participatory Prompt: Imagine your own civic thought bubble. What would you place inside it—not as a president, but as a citizen? A bridge? A ballot? A broken promise? A poem? Sketch it, write it, or describe it. Then share it with those of us who still believe democracy is a collaborative act. We’ll feature it in a future post. Let’s rebuild the narrative, one bubble at a time.
